We often hear complaints from users saying their humidity control packs “don’t work” or that the humidity levels are “unstable.” In most cases, however, the issue isn't the quality of the humidity pack itself—it’s how it’s being used. Whether you are using a Boveda pack or our premium brand, these three common mistakes will render even the best technology useless.
Today, we’re diving deep into these "silent killers" to ensure your valuable collection stays in perfect condition.
❌ Mistake 1: Mixing Different RH Levels in One Container
Some users try to "average" the humidity by placing both 65% and 72% 2-way humidity packs in the same box. This is a major no-no.
Why: Different RH packs engage in a "tug-of-war" inside a sealed environment. They fight each other to force the humidity toward their specific setpoint. This causes wild fluctuations in your hygrometer readings and drastically shortens the lifespan of the packs.
✅ The Fix: One container, one RH level. Keep it simple.
❌ Mistake 2: Mixing with Glycerin Packs, Sponges, or Electric Humidifiers
To "boost" the effect, some people add a wet sponge or a Propylene Glycol (PG) pack alongside their two way humidity packs.
Why: Our packs utilize advanced 2-way humidity control technology. Sponges and PG solutions rely on simple evaporation (1-way). When mixed, the principles conflict. The sponge releases excess moisture uncontrollably, forcing your humidity pack to work overtime absorbing that extra humidity until it eventually becomes rigid and dies.
✅ The Fix: Keep the system pure. Use only humidity packs. Remove all sponges, cedar humidifiers, or PG gel packs.
❌ Mistake 3: Poor Container Seal
This is basic physics, yet it's the most overlooked mistake.
Why: If your container lid is loose or the gasket is worn out, dry ambient air will constantly leak in. Your 2 way humidity control pack will overwork itself trying to maintain the RH level, causing it to dry out incredibly fast while never hitting the target humidity.
✅ The Fix: Check your seal! A quick test: place a dollar bill halfway under the lid; if it slides out easily when the lid is closed, your seal isn't tight enough.
The Bottom Line
Consistency is king. Remember this golden rule: Single RH + Pure System + Airtight Seal = Perfect Preservation.
